Industrial Solar Heating Applications
INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS
Any facility that requires quantities of heating, hot water or process pre-heating can benefit for the DSH System. Of necessity the more heat required in balance, the larger the area required for solar panels. Any heating application with slab flooring are perfect applications for solar heating.
HEAT STORAGE
Industrial storage varies with the type of industry. For example heavy oil separation can use solar to preheat injection sites or oil separators where the use of steam is required in direct or pre-heat applications.
Power generators require high temperatures in the order of 500c or more and this requires storage in liquefied salt. In this case solar CSP systems can readily provide this heat to directly power generation systems and to also bifurcate this heat into a molten salt storage system to use the heat during the nigh time.
In both cases, different solar systems are required as well as storage systems and are engineered to suite any given industrial requirement. There are many more applications that can benefit from solar heat.
SOLAR COLLECTORS
There three main types of solar heat collectors. EvT CEvT and CSP
EvT or Evacuated Tube collectors can operate in the 20c (68f) -160c (320f) range with 30c-100c being typical.
CEvT or Concentrated Evacuated tube collectors can operate easily at 200c[392f]
CSP or Concentrated Solar Power, like a magnifying glass, concentrates solar energy into a smaller area and at a much higher temperatures. 550c (1022f) is not an unreasonable expectation. CSp is most often used for power stations, and industrial pre-process.
Long Term Savings
Long term savings: Even without the focus of lower operating expense the savings with respect to carbon and GHG can be immense. As solar offsets normal carbon based heating emissions, 100% of that offset can be applied to the carbon emission savings, every year the alternate energy systems are operational
APPLICATIONS
Almost any process that requires heat can ave solar heating integrated to create real OpEx savings and GHG reduction.
Each application must be assessed on its own merits and performance as it applies to the processes involved. Often it is not a huge task to integrate solar into existing process controls.
Some typical Applications:
- Heavy Oil separation
- Electrical Grid Generation
- Water Desalination
- Dehydrating & Lumber
- Melting & Boiling
- Chemical production
- Metal pre-treating
- Automotive Coatings
- Medical Sterilization Steam
- Cooling Systems
Assessments for solar applications are a valid way to resolve estimated savings and carbon offsets. Validating solar use is the first step to understanding the pure power solar thermal can generate, it never fails to awe people who see this for the first time.
